Mr Magpie, welcome to the self-aware club

It turns out that Magpies are latest animal to have been discovered to be self-aware, from NewScientist.

Nuclear Accidents Continue

The US Government recently cited France as a model for nuclear power generation. Here is what you get for your tax dollars:

IOW, you get more posioned ground water. The US government already fails miserably at pollution control, this kind of thing would make matters worse. I have to say, I live within range of potential nuclear accidents and my opposition to nuclear power is now stronger than ever.

Soccer... excuse me. I meant Fußall.

For the Americans here, this year's Eurocup is now over. The Eurocup is a Europe-wide soccer competition that is second only to the World Cup. This year, Spain won. It was a long time coming for them. Congratulations.

Discus

I've been into fish keeping for a very long time. Sometimes I even had as much as 300 gallons of tanks at a time, sometimes none as conditions dictate.

Somewhat recently a friend up around Cologne gave me his old 300 liter (approx 80 gallon) tank as he could not use it anymore. It has been sitting in my office waiting... and waiting... and waiting. Hopefully this coming weekend I'll actually get a chance to put it together.

Here are the plans:

Inhabitants
--------------
Discus, Symphysodon aequifasciatus
Ram Cichlids (Schmetterlingsbuntbarsch), Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Paranoia, small towns and driving.

If you are driving through a small town (whether it be in Germany or anywhere else) and it seems like everyone is staring at you sternly... well... maybe they are. You are not paranoid. Here's a hint: slow down!

Lots of people drive through our village, particularly tourists, and they drive way to fast. They don't seem to have a clue that there are children and animals playing everywhere. This isn't the city, its the country and playing in open space in front of your house is normal here.

Learing from VMWare

I've been pretty critical of VMWare, as you can tell from my blog posts, even though I use their software nearly every day some of the rough spots seemed just darn inexecusable to me.

I am happy to observe that with their latest generation of software they are finally beginning to resolve many of the issues that I (and others) have been so annoyed with for a product that is as mature as it is.

VMWare Workstation Frustrations

I am disliking VMWare Workstation more and more each day I work with it. It does have some handy features (team mode is most useful to me) but the amount of time needed to maintain my VMs is getting to the point where I cannot actually work. The disks become defragmented too quickly which impacts performance, the networking in my VMs sometimes "just doesn't work" upon startup and I have to reboot said (Linux) VMs, when I install new versions (they have no upgrade function) all of my preferences are lost.... and the list goes on.

Art of Noise

I recently downloaded (legally, thank you) "Reconstructed... For Your Listening Pleasure" by the Art of Noise. They were big when I was in school and they were one of the few techno groups that I really liked. Then they disappeared from my music collection for a long, long time.

Winter Wonderland

Winter? In the middle of April? You betcha!

It is 9am here, right now... and it is -4 degrees Celsius (25 degrees Farenheit) with about a centimeter (about half an inch) of snow on the ground.

It Has Been a While...

It's been a while since I made an entry here. Mostly that is due my recent conversion. Unitarian Jihad has made some compelling arguments and as such, I've been brainwashed... erh... persuaded to follow the path of reason.

As part of my induction, I have been granted a new name.

My Unitarian Jihad Name is: Sibling Boot Knife of Forgiveness.
Get yours.
